7 Food Safety and Hygiene Tips for School Lunches

Make sure your child’s lunch stays safe to eat with these helpful tips from 4 Ingredients: More Than 400 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Recipes Using 4 or Fewer Ingredients, by Kim McCosker and Rachael Bermingham.

  1. Use an insulated lunch box or carry bag.
  2. Use a frozen ice brick or drink bottle in the lunch box.
  3. Freeze sandwiches the night before both as a timesaver and to keep foods cool.
  4. Chill cooked foods, e.g., hard-boiled egg, before packing in the lunch box.
  5. Store lunch box in a cool spot.
  6. Wash little (and big) hands thoroughly before eating, and after going to the toilet or playing with pets.
  7. Wash lunch box thoroughly after school every day.
